Morans Falls

Lamington National Park, with its unparalleled rainforest scenery, is usually not the first place I think of heading to for sunset views. However, there are some spectacular lookouts in the western sections of the park, so I figured a bushwalk in this general area would be a nice place to be at the end of the weekend.

Morans Falls is one such place, and can be reached along an easy trail that winds gently downhill through rainforest to the western escarpment of the Lamington Plateau. For Emily and myself this walk holds some significance, as we visited the falls on our first camping trip together.

A fallen tree full of memories

A little over half an hour of meandering through rainforest, and passing dozens of other visitors thankfully returning to their cars, we reached the Morans Falls Lookout. From here there is a pretty impressive view of the falls as they roll over the jagged cliffs into the valley below.

But more impressive views were to come - from at the top of the waterfall. The last day of Autumn was apparently a perfect time for our sunset, as from this location the sun wove around and behind the trees on the western cliffs, providing endless photo opportunities.

Sunlight sneaking its way down the valley, creeping towards the horizon

Sunset over The Rim, with the prominant double peaks of Mount Maroon and the more distant Main Range visible

Everything about this sunset was awesome. Emily might argue that it was a tad too chilly, but for me it was one of the best yet - and Lamington is no longer just a land of waterfalls and rainforests.
