Daves Creek Circuit

Location: Lamington National Park (Binna Burra), South East QLD
Date: 13th April, 2014
Distance: 12 km
Time: 3 h 30 min

Daves Creek Circuit is an excellent half day walk at Binna Burra that showcases many of the diverse ecosystems found at Lamington NP. This was my 5th time on the circuit, with overcast conditions again helping to accentuate the beauty of the rainforest (while limiting views).

After branching off from the Border Track, enormous buttressed rooted-trees and strangler fig-filled rainforest gradually merge with palm and fern-filled gullies surrounding trickling creeks. Shortly after turning right at the circuit turnoff, scenery changes abruptly into eucalypt forest before transforming into heathland as the track winds downhill along the cliffline. Highlights of this section include several lookouts and Molongolee Cave.

Dead tree branches look like skeleton arms reaching out for you

Numinbah Lookout

From Numinbah Lookout, it's uphill for the next hour or so as the vegetation slowly reverses into rainforest again. A rocky outcrop known as Surprise Rock is an opportunity for some easy scrambling with awesome views, and is one of the best lookouts in the park (even on overcast days).

Hmmm... doesn't look very high from below

Rainforest begins to dominate the scenery shortly before the circuit finishes, with the final 3.5 km returning via the starting route.
