Mount Superbus and Lizard Point

The Main Range from Lizard Point

An excellent day trip following the Main Range north from Teviot Gap.

This was a lovely walk through fairly remote and rugged country at the heart of the scenic rim, taking in several of the highest peaks in south east QLD.

The Superbus Plateau from Teviot Gap. The highest point is just right of centre and the shoulder is at right

After pushing through some thick regrowth and crossing the old bridge over Teviot Brook, it was uphill all the way to the summit of Mt Superbus. The track was vague at times but there were pink markers at regular intervals and the wholly rainforested ridge was very scenic. I could hear lyrebirds calling and saw quite a few pademelons hopping around.

There's not much to see at the summit, just a small cleared area and some vague views through the trees. On the way to Mount Roberts I ran into another hiker who had camped overnight at Lizard Point and stopped to chat for quite a while, before moving on.

The Steamer formation from near Mount Roberts

Not far past the Superbus-Roberts saddle the pink marker trail ended, but the track was still distinct and kept close to the eastern escarpment (though with limited views). I skirted around the rock step south of Mount Roberts on an obvious bypass - it could have been climbed directly instead, though with some care as it was fairly slimy and wet.

Eventually the exposed, rocky escarpment at Lizard Point materialised in front of me with the promised views certainly living up to the hype.
