Mount Wagawn from Numinbah Valley

For this walk I parked at the QLD-NSW border and followed the fence up to Bushwalkers Cave, then the steep ridge to the top of Mount Wagawn and onwards to Araucaria Lookout.

The border route is probably best approached from the northern side of the fence initially, but eventually thick regrowth forces you to brave a slightly broader-than-usual gap in the barbed wire menace and swap back to the south (at least, that was my experience). This first half hour of the walk sidles beside a large farm on the QLD side and, eventually, a sheer drop off on the NSW side, with plenty of views to the destination ahead.

The fence ends abruptly at a sheer cliff. There are a series of overhangs here leading to Bushranger's Cave, an interesting and scenic area well worth exploring.

From here it was less than an hour's climb to Mount Wagawn. Although steep, there were plenty of pink ribbons to mark the route (it was fairly obvious to follow anyway), and aside from a few places loaded with stinging nettles and wait-a-while vines it was quite pleasant.

Swirling mist cloaked the upper ridges as I arrived at the graded track network. From here it was easy walking to Araucaria Lookout and several other vantage points at this end of plateau.

Outside the sheltered confines of the rainforest the wind was ferocious so lunch was a cold and brief affair.

On descent from Wagawn there were a couple of places with nice views into NSW.
