Rock pool at Lower Ballunjui Falls |
Location | Lamington National Park |
Distance | 10.6 km (return) |
Time | 3.5 hours (return) |
Grade | Easy |
Track | Well-formed and well-signed bush track. |
Terrain | This track leads downhill from Binna Burra to the valley at the base of Ballunjui Falls, although the walk is not steep. There are a couple of rocky sections where care should be taken, particularly at the exposed Yanghala Lookout. Near Nixon Creek there are several rocky gullies that can be slippery after rain. |
Vegetation | Mostly subtropical rainforest. Patches of open forest and shrub near the lookouts |
Highlights | Rocky outcrops with excellent views, palm-filled rainforest along Nixon Creek leading to the base of Ballunjui Falls |
Description:
An easy half-day walk to the lower section of Ballunjui Falls, taking in Koolanbilba and Yangahla lookouts with incredible views across the Kurraragin Valley to Egg Rock, Turtle Rock and the Ships Stern range. Descending from the lookouts, the track meanders through palm-filled forests before hitting the rocky bed of Nixon Creek 600 m from the waterfall.
Ballunjui Falls is one of the tallest in the park at 150 m, although most of the upper sections are obscured from the base. If time permits, this walk can be extended by returning to Binna Burra via the Ships Stern Circuit.
The walk to Lower Ballunjui Falls can be enjoyed throughout the year, but is at its best after rain.
