Towering waterfalls, spectacular lookouts and lush rainforests - three good reasons why Springbrook National Park is so popular. Much of the best of what the park has to offer can be soaked up on the Warrie Circuit. When I visited in November 2014, the waterfalls were mostly dried up, some barely trickling. One year later, following an unusually wet Spring, it was a different story.

In October I visited Mount Cordeaux at Main Range National Park for the express purpose of seeing the giant spear lilies in flower. Last year I went in September, but was just a little too early to see them in full bloom. I wasn't disappointed this time around.

Last night was cold. Somehow under all those layers - I was essentially wearing every item of clothing I brought - and even after nabbing dad's blissfully warm sleeping bag liner, I was still cold. Crawling out of the tent I found everything left outside was now covered in a layer of frost. And yet it still felt warmer out here than when I was in bed.

By far the best time to be out in the bush is shortly after sunrise or shortly before sunset. Wildlife tends to be abundant, and, if skies are clear, lighting creates a dramatic scene. Unfortunately, these opportunities can be difficult to obtain on day trips, when a long drive/walk in the dark may be required to access remote sites.

One great thing about camping is that these opportunities are often at your fingertips.
